TELKOM Introducing Television Innovation Based Internet

PT TELKOM succeeded to perform laboratory test of television development based internet protocol or IPTV that will be performed until July and continued market test, with hope that IPTV product can be marketed at the beginning of year 2008. In laboratory test performed by Research & Development Center (RDC) Division TELKOM at Bandung (8/1), is showed how a television based Internet Protocol (IP) that can serve various services besides television broadcast. IPTV access can be done by network with minimal speed 2 megabyte per second, even can show needed display and ordered by customers.

Director of PT Telkom Arwin Rasyid, said, IPTV product is not only television that broadcasting television displays, but also provide interactive service facility in the form of personal video recording to access internet and data service according to consumer requirement. “IPTV is the newest technology service based Internet Protocol that developed by some telecommunication operators in the world. TELKOM will launch this IPTV next year,” Arwin said, after launching lab trial of IPTV service at R&D Center Tower Building, companied with Network & Solution Director, Abdul Haris, Consumer Director, Guntur Siregar and SGM R&D Center, Taufik Hasan.

Arwin added, market opportunity is enough big, because there are about 28 million domestics that have television at Indonesia, 95.000 among others have already exploited broadband speedy service. While, there are still about 10 million domestics at big cities that have already had TV as IPTV market target.

That IPTV network, Network & Solution Director, Abdul Haris said, will exploit 8,7 million fix telephone network cable at Indonesia. There are 5 million cables to be used as IPTV network that for now arranged to internet Speedy network. While Consumer Director PT Telkom Guntur Siregar added, after laboratory test, related with access speed, the next IPTV will be market tested first before launched to market. At the first launching, IPTV will be given priority to customers with unlimited access Speedy. The sum is 20-25 percent from 95.000 Speedy’s customers.

IPTV TELKOM Service

Senior General Manager R&D Center TELKOM, Taufik Hasan explained, IPTV is a service that giving visual contents and can be interactive. Various services that can be enjoyed, are :

Electronic Program Guide, is interactive service for user to select existing channel and to see program from each channels within 24 hours. During channel selection, user remain can see TV broadcast that going on.

Broadcast/Live TV, is television broadcast service that transmitted by public television stations like TransTV, RCTI, SCTV, MetroTV, etc. This service can be enjoyed by user like subscribe to pay TV.

Personal Video Recording, is service to store a TV broadcast into server. User can select a certain time period to store it from TV broadcast. Server will give quota storing in server based on storing duration, example 100 minutes or 200 minutes. After the quota has been fulfilled, to record the other program, user has to delete existing record until storing quota available.

Pause TV, that enabling user to can watch the past TV broadcast without recording. Backward watch duration of TV broadcast ranging from 10 up to 30 minutes. In this duration, user can watch back a moment broadcasted at TV, because of a matter overcame or want to be watched back.

Video on Demand, is a video broadcast based on user requirement. This service is a paid service, where user will select video that need to be turned, then it will lessen user deposit value before the video was played. Every paid video will have certain time period to can be turned. After time period finished, user have to pay back so that it can turn the video.

Music on Demand, is music buying service based on user requirement. This service is a paid service, where user will select music that need to be turn, then it will lessen user deposit value before the music was played.

Gaming, is service that can be played by user via TV equipment with or without additional equipment. Game type that can be served is online gaming with multiplayer or single player.

Interactive Advertisement, is advertisement service that enabling interested user to watch the advertisement and then buy the offered product via T-Commerce feature.

T-Commerce, is transaction via TV. User can buy goods offered by IPTV broadcast via TV. This transaction directly related with payment system to pay goods that be bought, then it will be sent to user.

News on Demand, is news broadcast service according to user requirement. User can select certain news broadcast that want to be watch, then IPTP system will turn the selected broadcast.

Data on Demand, is service based data that can give information according to user requirement. This service including weather on demand, internet access and stock exchange information service. This service based data will be connected directly to internet, so that got data are real time and up to date.

Pay per View, is commercial TV broadcast service that only can be enjoyed by paying user. Events like football world cup, fist, golf and sport broadcast or certain exclusive broadcast can be enjoyed by user who really interested and able to pay this broadcast. @ [Purel – RDC]
